Rubbish waste threatens Robertsham resident’s family’s health

The resident told the COURIER that the waste spreads to his home and he has to clean after it everyday.

A RESIDENT from Robertsham is complaining about the waste of rubbish dumped opposite his home.

The resident, who wished not be mentioned, said people all over the neighbourhood throw their unwanted belongings next to his home. What bothers the resident is that the waste is not put in waste bags but is scattered all over.

The resident told the COURIER that the waste spreads to his home and he has to clean after it everyday.

He claims the waste hasn’t been collected for three weeks even after he had logged several calls.

The smell and flies stemming from the waste is unbearable and he said his family’s health may be in question.

“It’s heartbreaking to see other people living their lives to the fullest while we are stranded here with this waste.

“All we want is to see the waste being removed by waste collectors and if some residents don’t have bins they must apply for them,” he said.

Another problem that the resident has is the community park.

He said the park needs to be fenced off because people are dirtying the park.

“Some even urinate in the park. Something needs to done to keep our community clean and respectable,” said the resident.

Councillor Rashida Landis said the dumping site is a six-month project, which she explained to everyone who contacts her regarding waste.

“We ask the public to be patient and we thank them for their patience,” said Landis.

The resident claims thugs often use the park as a hiding spot, more especially if there is overgrown grass.

Pikitup

Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi said illegal dumping is a punishable offence and residents have the responsibility of sending a WhatsApp to JMPD when they witness incidents of illegal dumping.

“Pikitup has always maintained that the City of Johannesburg can only maintain the highest level of cleanliness with the assistance of residents who must also adopt responsible waste management practices,” said Mkwanzi.

Mkhwanazi told the COURIER the responsible depot has been notified to clean the area in question, but in future residents are urged to play their part and report illegal dumpers to the JMPD.

“It’s the resident’s civic duty to ensure that their areas are clean and that no illegal dumping takes place.

“Residents are also encouraged to recycle their waste in large quantities to assist Pikitup to preserve the remaining landfill airspace,” said Mkwananzi.

Residents can report illegal dumping on 082 779 1361 or go to the nearest depot, which is Southdale Depot.
