Drain irks residents at Reuven Old Age Home

An 80-year-old resident of an old-age home wants drain to be fixed.

PAULINA van der Venter is irate with the management of Reuven Old Age Home for not fixing the open and smelly drain.

According to the 80-year-old, the drain has been left unattended to for four weeks and it breeds mosquitoes.

She told the COURIER she has strange body marks, thanks to mosquitoes bites.

The drain has made it hard for van der Venter and other residents to move freely as the garden is filled with puddles of mud.

She and other residents have seen their gardens being drenched by wastewater.

Van der Venter claims she lodged complaints to the management several times but she wasn’t assisted.

“I’m sick and tired of living like this. This place has made several headlines in the newspapers in the past years regarding service delivery but nothing is being done.

“We are old people here. We can’t be treated like we are nobodies. If we keep on inhaling the smell from the drain we may die or something,’’ van der Venter said.

Paulina van der Venter said she can’t cut her overgrown grass because water is all over the place.

She said the councillor knows about their debacle.

“The person who needs to help us is our manager, and he’s always missing in action. He doesn’t care about us. “There’s nothing difficult here. Just fix the drain and all will be well,” added the resident.

The home’s manager, Grieg Machette, told the COURIER the only complaint they received from van der Venter was regarding a toilet.

However, he promised to go and see what is going on so that the matter can be resolved.
