WATCH: Panyaza Lesufi congratulates the matric class of 2019

Premier David Makhura also mentioned that the province will put more effort in the foundation phases of education, the early childhood developments (ECDs) and primary schools.

GAUTENG Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi congratulated the class of 2019 for the effort they had put in their matric results. They achieved 87.23 %. This is a slight decline over the 2018 achievement of 87.88%.

Among other dignitaries who were present at the announcement of matric results in Mosaiek Teatro in Randburg on January 8 were Minister of Basic Education Angie Motsekga, Gauteng Premier David Makhura, City of Johannesburg executive mayor Geoffrey Makhubo and Head of Department Edward Mosuwe, to name a few.

Lesufi said in celebrating the class of 2019, it is only befitting and a privilege to recognise that the matrics’ success is due to the collective commitment to grow Gauteng together.

“In this regard, I reiterate our commitment to pursue a quality, equitable and inclusive basic education system for all young people of our province.

“To parents, educators, teachers unions, members of the Portfolio Committee for the Basic Education in Gauteng Legislature, learners’ organisations, I have consulted, debated and discussed strategies to improve the quality of education in our province with you.

“You have allowed us to introduce new strategies and through your support, all these innovations have begun to bear fruits. We commend you for your support.

“We will continue to engage with you this year as we build a quality education system in Gauteng.

“I would like to encourage experts in the field of education to continue providing support, and importantly, suggest new and innovative ways we can implement improving the quality of our education,” said Lesufi.

Makhura also mentioned that the province will put more effort in the foundation phases of education, the early childhood developments (ECDs) and primary schools.

He said the ‘honeymoon’ is over and they will now, together with Gauteng Department of Education, monitor the ECDs and primary schools for better results.

“We have compiled a report of the performances of all primary schools in Gauteng. It is high time we look closely on them and not only on Grade 12s,” he said.

All the schools in the South are above 60% with notably Hoërskool Die Fakkel, which has a 17.53% increase in its pass rate from 2018. Well done.
