A THUNDER and hail storm hit parts of the South of Johannesburg on the afternoon of November 21, causing flooding to many areas and damage to the Glen Shopping Centre.

“The heavy hail storm blocked the storm water drains around the centre and this resulted in the massive downpour and run-off water from the hill behind the centre to not disperse effectively. Certain areas of the mall were flooded,” said The Glen’s marketing manager, Dean Myburgh.

Part of the upper ceiling collapsed and according to Myburgh, this was as a result of “one of those unusual flash floods” combined with heavy hail which blocked the drains, forcing the water to overflow and come down to the lowest point, which happens to be The Glen.

Shop managers and owners tried to stop the deluge of storm water from rushing though their stores but just as soon as they had swept it away it came back with force.

“This is a real mess. We’ll have to work through the night to get our store ready for opening tomorrow. Fortunately, our stock seems to have escaped without much damage,” said one store manager.

Clean-up operations carried on late into the evening, with many owners and managers back at first light on Friday morning. “We can at least be thankful it’s not Black Friday today,” they added.

Most of the mall was open for trade on Friday with the food hall and movies trading as normal.
