WATCH: Respect and responsibility a must for learners

Founder of LLP Thabiso Dube, who is also an ex-convict, led the talk at the packed hall.

NATURENA’S non-profit organisation, Lentswe La Phetoho (LLP) wants to bring change in the lives of its community, especially the learners.

On November 11, in conjunction with Thuisa Branding Solutions, they visited Naturena Primary School Number One to conscientise the learners about crime, substance abuse, gangsterism and bullying. They also urged the learners to respect their parents and teachers.

Founder of LLP Thabiso Dube, who is also an ex-convict, led the talk at the packed hall. “Our organisation, Lentswe La Phetoho, which means ‘word of change’ is here to strengthen and emphasise the idea of respect and responsibility. I have been incarcerated for 37 years for wrongdoings and I’m here today to tell you that you must never exchange the uniform of excellence (you are wearing) with the uniform of shame (prison uniform).

“I also want to mention that bullies are weak people, they are cowards and full of fear. Hiding their cowardice, they hurt other people. People should respect you and not fear you. That is why I say bullies belong to the uniform of shame,” he said.

Thabiso also mentioned that smoking is not cool, especially for learners. He said it starts with recreational smoking, like hooka pipes, then it escalates to something stronger like dagga and other drugs. “Smoking damages and confuses your brain. So respect your body, respect your parents and teachers because if you don’t, you will end up in prison. Take your education seriously. Stop all the unnecessary things that disturb you,” he said.

The school’s principal, Mashau Ishmael, welcomed the tough, yet educational talk by LLP. “It is our responsibility to help the learners. As a school, we really appreciate what LLP is doing, and they are locals; that is a plus. I am impressed that the community is willing to help their immediate children. The school is willing to assist in whatever way we can,” explained Ishmael.

Eddie Magidela from Thuisa Branding Solutions (who is also an Alex FM DJ) said they support LLP and their programmes. They will be sponsoring them in moving forward. “We appeal to the community to help us reach as many people as possible. Every help, donations and sponsors will be welcomed,” he said.
