“If you suspect you may have cancer and are scared, take a friend along with you to see the doctor. Doctor’s rooms can be sterile and frightening. Being with someone else will help you to relax.”

A WONDERFUL morning was enjoyed by all the ladies who attended the Lusito Ladies Brunch fund-raiser in aid of the Lusito Association.

Naomi Contente from the Lusito Association welcomed the ladies and thanked the committee for all their hard work in organising such an event as this.

“I’d like to make special mention of a few of our learners who have come along to support the arts and crafts table. Please do go along and support this. There are some beautiful Christmas décor items as well as other lovely things. I hope you all enjoy a wonderful morning here together,” said Naomi. She also made mention of the sponsors who included Esteé Lauder and Simply Divine.

MC for the morning was Talia Reddy, who introduced guest speaker Prof Carol Benn, who gave an amazing talk to the audience about how to identify breast cancer in its different stages.

“What I would like to mention as well, is the fact that there are many men who are also affected by breast cancer. It’s not something that is prone to just women. In fact, far more men are being diagnosed with breast cancer than ever before.

“If you suspect you may have cancer and are scared, take a friend along with you to see the doctor. Doctor’s rooms can be sterile and frightening, being with someone else will help you to relax. Cancer isn’t something which suddenly develops, it takes time and there is no such thing as an emergency operation for cancer. Ask questions and more questions.”

She advised women to examine their own breasts, making sure there is no discharge from the nipple and to put their arms down by their sides when doing the examination. “If something feels like it shouldn’t be there, go for a check-up.”

She also said young girls should have the HPV vaccination, also boys. “There has been some negative discussion around this vaccination, but in my opinion it is an absolute must have,” she added.

Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly is essential in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Mammograms should be had every two years or even more so if cancer is in your family history.

Singers, Roberto Adao, Jason de Costa and Miguel Pregueiro performed songs which had the ladies swooning. Some even had the chance to take to the floor and dance. “Amazing talent and beautiful voices,” was the sentiment expressed.

A delicious buffet spread, catered for by Fatima Coelho from Simply Divine Catering, was served and went down a treat with all the guests. Fatima has been part of the Lusito Association from the early days and always goes the extra mile for Lusito.

As the event came to an end, everyone said it had been a truly wonderful morning with fabulous entertainment and food, as well as a fantastic guest speaker.
