Police net five speeding arrests

A number of arrests were made over the weekend by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) High-Speed Unit.

A NUMBER of negligent and reckless arrests were made over the weekend by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) High-Speed Unit.

On September 21, the speed law enforcement was done in the Alberton area, on the R59 Sybrand van Niekerk freeway direction South, between Kliprivier and R550.

On Sunday, the EMPD went on to the N3 freeway direction, South by Rand Airport turnoff, with the special operation taking place between 5am and 11am on both days.

Saturday’s operation saw a 32-year-old male driving a silver Mercedes Benz sedan clocking a speed in excess of 170km/h in a 120km/h stretch of the R59 freeway.

It is reported he claimed to be late for work. He was escorted to the Brackendowns SAPS where he was charged with reckless and negligent driving.

In the early hours of September 22, four drivers were arrested for exceeding the speed limit on the N3 freeway.

The arrested drivers clocked speeds of between 163km/h and 202km/h, with a 21-year-old male in an Opel Okra SUV recording a speed of 202km/h.

He said that he was rushing home, but it was later established he allegedly took the car without permission.

All the arrested were charged with reckless and negligent driving.
