2019 saw South Africa’s Bafana Bafana reach the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt. Our national team made us proud by taking out host nation Egypt in the knockout stage of the event. The 2019 FIFA Women’s Football World Cup was hosted by France.

This was the first time that our national women’s team participated in the tournament but unfortunately, they did not make it past the group stages. Banyana Banyana recently lost against our neighbours Botswana and subsequently did not qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

The football season in Europe just kicked off. The English Premier League is now at match day 5 out of 38. The league sees the 20 best football clubs in England competing for the title. The tournament only finishes in May 2020, but early indicators show Liverpool and Manchester City as the two front runners. Last year saw Manchester City walk away with the trophy after finishing on top of the log ahead of Liverpool with just one point separating the two teams. La Liga, which is Spain’s top professional tournament, also boasts 20 teams competing to be the best football club in Spain. La Liga is one of the most-viewed sporting events in the world. Barcelona walked away with the title this year after defeating Levante FC 1-0 in the final.

Locally, we have a few tournaments but our top-tier league in South Africa is the Premier Division. We also have different football competitions such as the Nedbank Cup, the Telkom Knockout and the MTN 8 cup.
