GALLERY: Colourful hair makes her feel empowered

Dyeing her red, yellow and blue is key for Kalane this spring.

The COURIER asked other readers what they thought about dying their hair.

SHE is a beautiful girl, slender and perfectly figured but what stands out is her bright ruby red hair which sets her apart from other girls in her area.

Most women consider their hair as a symbol of beauty and defining their personality, but according to Kalane Ntswaki, she dyes hair for fun and to impress her peers.

The 20-year-old from Jackson informal settlement said she loves dyeing her hair because it reminds her of all the fun and excitement she used to have before conceiving a child.

She started dyeing her hair when she was 16 because she wanted to stand out and look more beautiful than her friends.

Speaking to the COURIER she said living in a settlement, one has to always look appealing and the only way for her to be different is to dye her hair.

“I love dark hair but it doesn’t give me that feeling of being an independent woman. Hair defines who you are so I’m a person who loves partying around and my hair defines me as an outgoing person,” she said.

The only colours she dyes with are red, blond and blue because, she claimed, it makes her look beautiful.

“As a girl, you need to style and treat yourself with all kinds of things around you. I don’t see myself without dyed her. Even my boyfriend knows that without dyeing my hair I can’t function,” said Kalane.

She changes her hair colour every two months and she said she only spends R75 to change colour.

“People say my dyed hair suits me. I feel empowered when my hair is dyed. I would encourage other people to also dye their hair,” she said.

A professional stylist, Nhlanhla Nxumalo said, “Summer has arrived and dyeing of hair is a summer trend. Summer is about colour and most people like to welcome summer or spring with colours and what better way than to dye their hair during this time.

“So I would encourage Kalane to dye her hair but she should take care of it,” said Nxumalo.
