UPDATE: Sewage leaks into Wemmer Pan Dam in process of being repaired

Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton said he would like to thank Joburg Water Depot manager Mark Kruger and his team for their quick response to this issue.

AFTER the COURIER reported on raw sewage spillage into Wemmerpan Dam, a Joburg Water team detected two sewage leaks which are in the process of being repaired.

Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton said he would like to thank Joburg Water Depot manager Mark Kruger and his team for their quick response to this issue.

“It is critical that the Wemmerpan Dam is looked after as it is still very well utilised and has a fantastic variation of fish and bird life that occupies it.

“On August 1, Clr Tyrell Meyers and I were alerted to the fact that sewage was leaking into the Wemmerpan Dam.

“As a result, we went to the dam and we were quite alarmed to see that there was sewage flowing through the storm water channel that flows into the dam.

“Upon seeing this, we immediately contacted the Joburg Water Depot manager, Mark Kruger, who dispatched a team to detect where the sewage leaks were coming from.

“In addition to this, a meeting was set up with the relevant officials to meet at the site the next day.

“At the meeting, we were informed that the two sewage leaks had been detected and were in the process of being repaired.

Wemmerpan Dam will be treated with environmentally friendly chemicals to minimise the impact on its ecosystem.

“In terms of assessing the state of the water following this sewage leak, samples of the water were taken for testing and contractors will treat the water with environmentally friendly chemicals to minimise the impact on the dam’s ecosystem,” explained Crichton.

This matter falls under Ward 57. Crichton is the stand-in councillor for Ward 57 while Clr Faeeza Chame is out of the country.
