Top 5 Foods to Prepare in the Microwave

Microwaves are capable of doing a lot more than just making popcorn. If you're preparing a time-consuming dish, your microwave can drastically cut your cooking time in half.

Here are ten foods you can pop into the microwave without sacrificing any flavour:

Corn

Corn is usually prepared by grilling it on a braai stand or boiling it in a pot. But it’s quicker and easier to cook with a microwave. All you need to do is put the corn in a bag and microwave for three to five minutes. Just make sure the bag you’re using is microwave safe.

Poached Eggs

Browse through the poached egg recipes in your cookbook and you’ll probably be told to use a stove. But a microwave works just as well. Crack the egg in a mug that’s half full of water and a tablespoon of vinegar. Then place a plate on top of the mug and microwave for one minute. When you’re done, season with Aromat and you’re good to go.

Nachos

Anyone who’s made nachos in an oven knows that the process can dry out the cheese. The best way to prepare nachos with a microwave is by heating it in segments. Microwave the chips and cheese first, then throw on the toppings and more cheese before microwaving again.

Pasta

If you’re craving pasta but aren’t up to the task of cooking it on a stove, the microwave is your next best bet. Place the pasta in a large bowl, add water until the pasta is completely covered by about six centimetres. Now put the bowl on top of a large plate, in case the water spills over while it’s being microwaved. Microwave in three-minute intervals, and check the pasta whenever the timer stops to prevent it from overcooking.

Steamed Vegetables

Steamed vegetables work just as well in the microwave if you’re careful not to overcook them. Place your vegetables in a bowl filled with water. Then cover the bowl and microwave on high for three to four minutes. To prevent the vegetables from overcooking, heat them in two-minute intervals and check them each time the microwave stops.

Bacon

You don’t need a pan to whip up some bacon. Place two paper towel sheets on a plate. Lay your bacon on the paper towels, and make sure the slices don’t overlap. Place more paper towel sheets on top of the bacon and microwave on high for four to six minutes.

Whether you’re craving a snack or an entire meal, these microwave recipes are the perfect solution when you’re pressed for time. And they’ll taste so good that no one will be able to tell you used the microwave.
