PANDEMONIUM ensued outside Court 13 on June 10 after magistrate Basimane Molwana granted murder accused Mohamed Mwela R5 000 bail of allegedly stabbing Daniel Bakwela to death.
It was a formal bail hearing at Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. Family and friends of the deceased were not happy that Mwela received bail after he was charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Molwana said the court found the interest of justice permitted the accused to be released on bail.

Mwela was ordered by the magistrate to relocate to a jurisdiction which is known to the court, he must not communicate with the state witnesses, he must not enter the jurisdiction of Turffontein, he is prohibited to enter Forest High School until his trial is finalised and he must surrender his passport if he has one.
Speaking to the media, Phindile Mjonondwane from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said they did not oppose bail because of the facts at the state’s disposal.
“We called the family of the deceased and explained to them what is going to happen. We leave the case in the hands of the court. We further requested them to furnish us with the death certificate because the deceased was also facing a criminal charge of armed robbery in the same court and he was supposed to appear in August. We needed it so the charges can be formally withdrawn. One of the deceased’s friends, who was also stabbed, is facing a similar charge,” she said.
The case was postponed to July 10 in Court 10.
