WATCH: Oakdene’s pit bull takes a bullet to save family from thieves

He fired about six shots and unfortunately one hit the dog in the front and it exited at the back of the shoulder.

AN Oakdene family is still in shock after two armed men stormed their home on Mother’s Day after a foiled hijacking, and shooting their pit bull, Rocky, at about 6pm. The bullet which hit Rocky just missed the jugular.

According to the son of the family, two men were hijacking a car outside their house. His sister and her boyfriend were outside. When they heard a commotion in the street the boyfriend went to investigate.

“When my sister’s boyfriend went to find out what was going on he was faced by two armed men who ordered him to tell my sister not to press the panic button inside the house. By this time my sister had went inside the house to alert me and my mom about what was happening outside,” explained the son.

Several other bullets hit the wall.

He then quickly went to open the back gate for Rocky to come into the house. At this stage one of the armed men was already at the opened front door of the house.

“He started firing toward the advancing dog. He fired about six shots and unfortunately one hit the dog in the front and it exited at the back of the shoulder. It missed vital organs and the dog is recuperating at home,” he said.

The armed men managed to run away. They took the boyfriend’s keys, cellphone and the gift he bought for his girlfriend’s mother for Mother’s Day.

One bullet hit the cupboard.

“This was the first time that this has happened to us and Rocky really saved us,” he said.

Moffat View SAPS communication officer Capt Jeff Phora said they are investigating cases of armed robbery and attempted murder.

Rocky is recovering at home after the incident.
