#IMadeMyMark: Keep safe on election day

Remember to keep your eyes open as you visit your voting station.

ON May 8 you will be able to join others on #IMadeMyMark after you have made your mark in the upcoming elections.

But is also important to keep your own safety in mind.

Before you leave, it is important to take the necessary things with you. Make sure you have your keys, phone and ID with you before you leave the house.

It is a good idea to let someone know where you will be voting in case they need to reach you.

Setting off to the voting station be careful. Remember that the vast majority of South Africans will be travelling on the day so make sure you keep an eye out for pedestrians and other motorists. Make sure you have enough petrol to get home again after the event.

When arriving at the voting station make sure you lock your car by physically checking the handle.

Only take things with you to the station that are absolutely necessary.

Rather leave your valuables in the car, or at your home, to keep you safe from wandering fingers.

While it is a day full of excitement, remember to keep your wits about you and watch around you for anything strange.

At the voting station be sure to follow the instructions of the voting officials.

Remember that your vote is your own and you do not have to entertain the wishes of other trying to persuade you.

Make sure your vote is secret. It is your right to keep your vote to yourself and only tell those you wish to.

The privacy of voting is extended to the other people as well. Give them the space and privacy they need to make their vote.

We hope you will have a safe and satisfying election day and be able to say #IMadeMyMark
