Support Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month

April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, please, South Africa, give a thought to our animals and help the charities that help them.

I watched the television showing the awful fire burning the beloved cathedral of Notre-Dame, an iconic building in Paris. It is awful to lose a piece of history.

Then I listened to various companies and individuals donating millions of euros to rebuild it. I cannot believe this reaction – it is after all only bricks and mortar.

Recently, we were involved in a horrific attack by a pit bull on a gentle Labrador. It was absolutely sickening and despite our best efforts, the Labrador died. The owner left it for over 48 hours to suffer.

Did you know that the SPCA no longer has a hospital to treat suffering animals because of lack of funding? Did you know the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) is not open from Saturday afternoon until Monday morning?

There are many charities for people in South Africa, but what kind of nation are we that can witness such cruelty to animals and not try to sustain the very organisations that are struggling to assist them?

Both the SPCA and the AACL are doing their best, but cannot survive without our help. We need them to be strong for us. There is a saying, “The way in which a nation treats its animals is a good measure of its civilisation.”

April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. Please, South Africa, give a thought to our animals and help the charities that help them.
