25 Speedsters nabbed on N12 and N3 highways

All the offenders were released on R1 000 bail each and are expected to appear in court soon

EMPD’s High Speed Unit members were out in full force targeting speedsters on both the N3 and N12 freeway hotspots.

Twenty-five drivers ended up behind bars for excessive speeding from April 19 to April 21 .

Seven drivers aged between 21 and 56 were apprehended on Friday between 10am and 4pm on N12 eastbound by the R59 bridge, when caught doing speeds of 198, 188, 188, 176, 173, 170 and 161km/h in a 120km/h zone.

They were all men, including a pastor who claimed he was late for a service and an SBV technician advancing the reason that he was rushing to fix an ATM.

The arrestees were locked up at the Alberton Police Station, but released later after posting R1 000 bail each. They are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

On Saturday between 6am and 10am on N12 eastbound by the Atlas turn-off, which has a speed limit of 120km/h, two speedsters – a woman and a man aged 26 and 27 – ended up behind bars for clocking 188 and 166km/h. The pair was detained at the Boksburg North Police Station.

On April 20 on R21 southbound between North Rand and the N12 bridge, which is an 80km/h zone, five drivers were nabbed for excessive speeding between 10am and 12.30pm, caught doing speeds of 140, 134, 123, 120 and 114km/h.

The arrested drivers were all men between the ages of 22 and 42 claiming that they were late for work. After being charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Boksburg North Police Station, they were released on R1 000 bail each.

Sunday’s operation resulted in five drivers arrested on the N3 between the Geldenhuys Interchange and the Rand Airport turn-off, which is a 120km/h zone. The arrested drivers were aged between 21 and 53 and were clocked at 180, 174, 165, 162 and 162km/h.

Two were on motorcycles. They were detained at the Germiston Police Station and later released on R1 000 bail each. They will be appearing in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

Six more speedsters were arrested on Sunday on N12 west and eastbound between Sam Green Bridge Road and the Edenvale turnoff, which is a 120km/h zone.

The six arrested drivers included a 45-year-old man on a Triumph motorcycle, clocked at 229km/h. The rest were caught driving at 189, 179, 179, 176 and 167km/h.

All those arrested are aged between 21 and 45. They were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Bedfordview Police Station and were also released after posting bail of R1 000 each.

They are due to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
