WARNING: Heavy rain with the possibility of flooding expected on Wednesday afternoon

DEMS is on high alert for any eventualities that might erupt as a result.

AS per weather warning by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours are anticipated over parts of the City of Ekurhuleni this afternoon (April 10) and may result in localised flooding.

The City’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) would like to alert the residents, industrial and business communities to be extra cautious of possible flooding in flood-prone areas. Motorists are alerted to be very cautious while on the road due to the slippery road surface and even when crossing flooded areas. Drivers are to keep following distance and avoid high-speed driving as this attributes to fatal crashes.

Heavy rain may also result in rivers, low-lying bridges and all water channels to flood, causing damage to adjacent and downstream areas. Pedestrians are alerted not to cross flooded streams where water is above ankle level.

DEMS is on high alert for any eventualities that might erupt as a result. Communities affected by flooding or any life-threatening emergencies are advised to call the Emergency Call Centre immediately to render swift intervention.

In case of an emergency:

• Call the DEMS direct line: 011 458 0911, cellphone 112, or national emergency number 10177.

• Ensure that you have the emergency call centre contact numbers readily and clearly displayed for everyone to know and use.

• Numbers should be saved and easy to access on your telephone or cellphone.

• Speak clearly on the phone when reporting an emergency.

• Provide the operators with all the necessary details required.

• Do not end the conversation until all questions are answered.
