Crown Garden's Carrick Place Old Age Home resident, Myrtle Moolman, said liquid gold is flowing down the streets.

FRUSTRATIONS are high for residents as clean water is being wasted in the streets of the South.

Crown Garden’s Carrick Place Old Age Home resident, Myrtle Moolman, said liquid gold is flowing down the streets.

“This is not on, I mean this has been happening for months and no one is bothered except us. Clean water is going to waste day and night. As old people, we are on our own and no one is caring for us. The authorities (Joburg Water) said they do not fix private properties, but this is the City’s property,” she said.

Linda Botha, who lives in Chrisville, also complained about burst sewers and also clean water running to waste.

“We are in Charlotte Court at the intersection of Prinsloo Street and Harvey Road, we have a swamp site and human waste site due to burst pipes. This has been going on for years, there is collapsed ground in an open veld because of this and with lots of children in the area this is dangerous, never mind the health risk, the smell and human waste,” she explained.

However, local councillor Rashieda Landis said Joburg Water, City of Johannesburg officials and plumbers were on site in February. They opened the drains that were blocked.

“Unfortunately, these blockages are reoccurring. Pikitup came to assist too. Notwithstanding that all of the flats have title deeds, they need to maintain their space. I’m always ready to assist. It just seemed that the residents are not willing to appreciate the work that gets done by anyone. We can only do so much. Unfortunately, we do not live there. Tenants need to take care of their drainage systems. The amount of garbage that came out of the blocked drains was unreal,” Landis said.

Besides these, a resident contacted the COURIER about clean water running down Daisy Street in Rosettenville. At the corner of Main and Daisy streets and corner of George and Daisy streets, there are two damaged meters where water flows into the streets.

The COURIER contacted Isaac Dhludhlu, manager of communication and marketing at Joburg Water, and he said they do not attend to private properties, if the leak is on the pavement or street they will attend to it. After lodging the Rosettenville leaks, he provided the reference numbers: 402013400 and 402013402.
