Walks for grieving residents of Naturena

Naturena residents, CPF members and religious leaders organised a prayer-walk after experiencing a high volume of killings in the area.

MALTA Street was blocked by grieving residents of Naturena on March 1, as they offered their prayers to families who lost their loved ones in recent shootings.

Residents, CPF members and religious leaders organised a prayer-walk after experiencing a high volume of killings in the area. The walk started at around 6pm, with a large number of residents holding lit candles in memory of the fallen residents.

They visited every family who lost a loved one in the shooting on February 24 at Lindi’s Tavern, or prior. Mondeor SAPS also joined in the walk showing their support.

Vusi Shongwe, a relative to Lindi Shongwe who owns Lindi’s Tavern where the dramatic shooting started, said, “Thank you so much for the support. Our family is mourning after two of our family members were shot at with one critically injured and one dying. We are thankful for your support.”

Residents said they were tired of the killings happening in the area and want to take a stand against any criminal activity in Naturena.

One of the residents, Sharlotte Mokotedi, said, “We can’t continue to bury our fellow neighbours due to insane individuals. We as residents need to come together and join with police officials and put a stop to this.”

Every family blessed with a visit from the residents offered their gratitude.

Ward 119 councillor Mangaliso Ngwanye told residents walks of this nature need more involvement from the SAPS, JMPD and other neighbouring suburbs to offer support.
