Ward 124 Councillor disgusted by overgrown grass in Turffontein

Mnyameni says it worries him to see school learners having to walk pass these unattended heaps of grass every day.

WARD 124 councillor Mongameli Mnyameni is frustrated with overgrown grass in his ward.

The angry councillor demands answers from JRA or City Parks to why there hasn’t been any attempt in cutting the overgrown grass in the ward.

The most concerning place in the ward is Tramway Street, corner of Bishop Street in Turffontein. The grass there hasn’t been attended to since 2017 resulting in a hideout spot for thugs.

Residents of the ward have been demanding answers from Mnyameni regarding neglect and overgrown grass in the ward. The councillor claims he has been enquiring with JRA and City Parks to attend the situation but that transaction has yielded barren outcomes.

Mnyameni said it worries him to see school learners having to walk pass these unattended heaps of grass every day.

“My job is to escalate matters of this nature to relevant people and that’s what I’m doing and won’t stop until this is over. Even I feel frightened just standing next to this overgrown grass,” said Mnyameni.

One of the residents, Gift Ndlovu, said this issue of overgrown grass needs to be dealt with decisively because it has been a nuisance since.

“The councillor should definitely deal with such things. My worry is that the robbery of residents is increasing due to the long grass which can be used to hide. I believe after the intervention of JRA or City Parks all will go well,” said Ndlovu.

Mnyameni poured his frustrations out to COURIER and said his ward is all messed up because some contractors are failing to do their jobs.

City Parks said the relevant people to solve the problem is JRA.

The COURIER contacted JRA and was told that the relevant people to speak to is City Parks.

The COURIER decided to correspond with both parties telephonically where both parties caucused who is responsible for grass cutting on sidewalks.

In the conversation, the City Park’s official told the JRA official that they as City Parks are currently cutting in open spaces only stating sidewalks and pavements are JRA’s responsibility and JRA has the budget to cut grass on sidewalks. He further stated that the only way for City Parks to cut grass on sidewalks is if JRA gives them the work order and budget.

The JRA official failed to come up with a concrete answer.
