Reuven Old Age Home gets a visit from former Tshwane mayor

His visit was met with different grievances being raised by the complex’s residents, ranging from long grass, broken geysers to safety and security.

SENIOR citizens at Reuven Old Age Home had a surprise visit from former Tshwane mayor councillor Solly Msimanga on January 17.

His visit was met with different grievances being raised by the complex’s residents, ranging from long grass, broken geysers to safety and security. He listened to them as he was doing rounds at the complex.

Emmarantia van der Merwe said they need maintenance at the complex, and Kathrine Ziervogel said she was pleased to see the mayor visiting them.

Pensioner Patrick O’Toole explained to the mayor thieves are disturbing them because they steal car batteries and tyres.

Msimanga promised the elderly he will look at their problems and try to assist them. He also encouraged them to register and vote in the coming elections.

“These are our senior citizens and we must not treat them as forgotten people. They need to live here with dignity. We will try to engage all the city’s departments who are supposed to help them.

“The lack of security and maintenance issues need to be addressed. I don’t know the role of social development in terms of coming here and talking to the people, offering extra services they should be offering. The state of assistance from health services is something that will be looked at as well.

“From our side we will engage the council and look at social development at the provincial level – what they are doing to this complex and other old age homes in the area,” he said.
