Councillor Mnyameni throws himself into local trench problem

Councillor Mnyameni promises to deal with the trench situation.

WARD 124 Clr Mongameli Mnyameni responded to a complaint lodged by Bernice Thompson about her boundary wall which is on the verge of collapsing because of the deep and long trench in La Rochelle Corner and Genske Road, right next to her house.

Mnyameni visited the scene to try to establish which contractor or company created such unbearable mess.

He was appalled when he saw a heap of rubbish next to the trench which is also a concern to Thompson’s family.

Mnyameni told the COURIER he would lodge calls to have this rubbish removed soon because this is creating a health hazard.

“This is the first time seeing and hearing about the trench. This is abnormal digging a trench and leaving it open. Clearly, it can’t be accredited contractors or whatsoever,” he said.

The Thompson’s family was not available for comment on the day of the councillor’s visit, therefore the Clr called few residents to get a detailed story regarding the people who dug the trench.

Residents said the diggers are drug users and this isn’t the first trench they have dug in the area. Residents say this trench was dug during the festive holidays.

“What causes problems like these is that the city assigns contractors to install electrical cables and pipes without informing me and this leads to illegal activities because I don’t know who is who and neither do the residents. But I will contact the relevant people to deal with this trench debacle,” explained Mnyameni.

He urges residents to report any suspicious activities to the police or to him. The councillor can be contacted on 078 264 2930 or ngamie25@yahoo.com
