Rosettenville-based Rio Douro Fisheries workers protest over wage increase

Workers claim they gave 48 hours’ notice before the protest.

ROSETTENVILLE-based Rio Douro Fisheries employees downed their tools, demanding a 10 per cent wage increase on December 10.

Workers chanted ‘Give us 10 per cent’ outside the entrance while inside the store it was business as usual as some employees didn’t go on strike. Workers claim they gave 48 hours’ notice before the protest.

Mbulelo Joloza, Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) Gauteng provincial organiser, said they will continue with their protest until their demands are met.

“All we need is what belongs to us as workers. Before the protest, we engaged with management about salary increment, but they were only willing to settle for five per cent. On a second attempt, they tabled nine per cent. We as workers are standing firm on our 10 per cent demand,” said Joloza.

One worker said: “We have families to support. All we want is a salary increment so we can support our families.”

Rio Douro Fisheries manager Manny Sequeira said the store has been in existence since the 90s and this is the first time they experience this kind of a thing. They will sit down with employees and see if they can’t come up with a concrete solution.

Employees informed COURIER they are giving their employers 48 hours to respond to their demands. If they do not the matter will escalate. COURIER will keep readers updated.
