Using dance to fight substance abuse

His vision is to keep the youth of South Hills out of substance abuse and immorality through dancing.

AMTEN Wagner (33) from South Hills wants to give youth an alternative way of living a crime-free life.

His vision is to keep the youth of South Hills out of substance abuse and immorality through dancing.

Back in 2016, Amten formed a dancing group called Trigger but due financial strains, the idea fizzled out. “The group collapsed and some members chose to dedicate their lives to drugs and immorality,” Amten said.

Amten believes he has failed the youngsters of South Hills but wants to make amends by re-establishing the group.

Amten, also a motivational speaker, said his father motivated him to open a dance group to help young people.

“It pains me to see young people using drugs and wasting their lives on booze. Currently, I am doing solo performances at charity events to boost my name. But all that I need is to see young people coming together with one purpose – to dance,” said Amten.

He is presently organising a trip to Durban to learn more about the art of dancing. On his return next year, he plans to relaunch his group from South Rand Recreation Centre.
