Hamlet Foundation takes care of intellectually challenged

A place like The Hamlet Foundation is a solid foundation and source of hope for parents with intellectually challenged children.

MANY intellectually challenged children in South African are often not given the same attention as the ones with no intellectual challenges.

A place like The Hamlet Foundation is a solid foundation and source of hope for parents with intellectually challenged children.

The foundation was formed by a group of mothers who had children with intellectual challenges and who were excused from the mainstream schools. The formation was to allow the mothers to be able to go to work and continue with daily routines.

The foundation was established in 1954 and it has expanded and developed to include a school for 342 intellectually disabled children, a residential centre for 60 intellectually disabled adults, and an assembling and packaging workshop for 150 intellectually disabled workers.

The children do the packing for MTN Walk The Talk 702, Dis-chem and Future Packaging.

This assists adults in achieving their maximum potential, enabling them to lead as normal a life as possible.

A support system is provided to siblings and parents and to the broader community. The foundation caters for every age group.

The secretary, Prisca Nkomazan, told the CHRONICLE  that intellectually challenged people in the organisation are treated like everyone else and she also said they often hold sessions to encourage and motivate them about their self-esteem.

The philosophy from the inception of The Hamlet is that it is an organisation founded to primarily provide a home, schooling and training for the indigent and vulnerable who have no parent and who have been disadvantaged through various factors of life.
