Neglected Regents Park’s netball court poses danger to children

Neglected netball court worries resident.

WHAT used to be a safe netball court for children and adults to play on has become a dumping site, a home to vagrants and a hiding spot for criminals, said a concerned resident.

The Regents Park netball court in Samuel Street has long grass growing through the cracked surface and is filthy beyond belief.

The local resident told the COURIER that the grounds have been neglected since February last year and that they are dangerous to children.

The resident further claimed that criminals frequent the grounds at night, burning stolen copper cables and tyres on the court.

“We have children who love netball, but they can’t use the courts. If something can be done about the matter, our community will be excited and pleased,” said the resident.

In the past, netball tournaments used to be hosted at this court, but this is no longer the case.

The resident told the COURIER that they have informed Ward 56 councillor Michael Crichton about the matter.

Crichton said he had escalated the matter to the Johannesburg property manager for sports and recreation, Johan Jansen van Vuuren.

“This has been bothering me for some time now because the court used to be in good condition. We will try and make sure that court gets back to its good condition,” Crichton said.

The COURIER is awaiting comment from Jansen van Vuuren.
