Learners cross busy R82 and R554 roads to get to school
Parents say the road has claimed many lives of adults and children in the past.
PARENTS believe the ever busy R82 and R554 roads in Jackson Drift informal settlement are death traps for children.
Parents say the road has claimed many lives of adults and children in the past. This causes a lot of stress for parents as there’s nobody who marshals children across the busy road safely.
JMPD and Mondeor SAPS couldn’t provide statistics of how many lives the road claimed in the past few years.
Most of the children in the settlement attend school at Elethu Themba Public School in Eikenhof, which is across the busy road. There is no alternative route but the R82.
Parents want JMPD to help make sure children are safe when crossing the road.
“I used to accompany my child to school but after finding a job, I couldn’t anymore. What worries me is that my child can be knocked over by a car at any given time. If there could be someone who would help in making sure children cross safely, it wouldn’t be stressful,” said a concerned parent.
One of the learners who cross the road every day to get to school said: “We are used to it now but it’s dangerous because some motorists speed a lot on this road.”
JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said: “There is an officer who has been placed there to help learners.”
This comes after COURIER contacted about the matter.
Elethu Themba was contacted several times but they couldn’t be reached.
