Kliprivier SAPS shares holiday season safety tips

“Be safe and take care. Don’t be a victim of crime this festive season,” said Lt Col JJ Landman.

WITH the festive season around the corner, Kliprivier SAPS felt it necessary to share some safety tips.

Station commander Lt Col JJ Landman said this time of year people slowly start to wind down and relax.

“I want to urge residents to be vigilant, don’t get caught off guard during this time. Remember, criminals are always on the lookout for the easy target and fast money,” he said.

Here are some safety tips he shared with the COURIER:

• Always lock your vehicle’s doors and keep the windows closed. Do not leave your vehicle unlocked, even if you think you will be away for only a minute.

• Limit your trips at night or at least take someone along with you. Vary the route you travel to work and back if possible.

• Ensure all gates are closed and locked and your property is locked away.

• Don’t create opportunities for the criminal element.

• Ensure good relationships with all your neighbours and keep an eye out for each other.

• If strangers loiter near or at your driveway, rather drive past. If they loiter for a long time, report it to your nearest police station.

• Check the perimeter of your property for any vulnerable spots such as a broken fence. Cut overgrown bushes that criminals might use as convenient hiding places. Inside your home ensure burglar bars and security gates are secure and that magnetic strips on doors and windows are intact. Test your alarm system earlier rather than later so that any faults can be fixed before you go away.

• Make sure you have good lighting. Don’t leave the outside lights on during the day.

• Have a list with all the contact details of emergency services nearby.

“Be safe and take care. Don’t be a victim of crime this festive season,” said Landman.
