Museum opens its doors to the public

Open day at James Hall Museum of Transport

JAMES Hall Museum of Transport celebrated Heritage Day with vintage cars and bikes show in La Rochelle on September 23.

The primary mandate of James Hall Museum of Transport is to restore, preserve, and promote the history of land transport in South Africa.

The event characterised various activities such as exhibitions, car shows, free bus rides, tour guides, mini train rides, food stalls, arts and crafts. Vintage cars and bike clubs were invited to showcase their private collections to the public. Other stakeholders which were there include Southern African Veteran and Vintage Association (SAVVA), Gauteng Tourism Authority and Joburg Tourism.

Ward 57 councillor Faeeza Chame took it upon herself to take COURIER on a tour around the museum. The museum comprises six sections, which are old buses, vehicles, trucks, fire brigade vehicles, delivery bicycles and buses that use coal.

In the midst of the tour, the museum management issued a bus that took the visitors on a tour around Jozi’s CBD. People were excited to be driven around in a 1952 RT London bus which is still in good condition.

The tour is well worth it with everything from buses from the ’70s to vintage cars and old fire trucks.

Residents and schools are encouraged to support the museum.

Museum management encourages the members of the public to frequently visit the museum.

“Events like this helps local residents to know about their country. Today, some of our people don’t know much about the history of this country. But through events like these, people can be able to learn and know about their country,” said Chame.
