RECENTLY, Ward 23, with DA Clr Sarah Wissler, recognised women within the ward who are unsung heroes and go the extra mile.
Wissler welcomed everyone to Turn ’n Tender, Bassonia, where the awards ceremony took place, explaining how the Virago Awards were achieved.
“Virago actually means Warrior Women, and that is what you all are who are with us today. The unsung heroes are the ones we wanted to honour today,” said Wissler.
Guest speaker Catherine Constantinides was welcomed by the women and went on to say, “Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be here today. You are here as pillars of strength within your community and although I’m sure you have fallen many times you have gotten back up and carried on,” said Catherine.
She went on to chat about what is important to her in life.
“Between Ella Bella and myself, we began the first Miss Earth SA and now we are beginning to connect the dots between health and social issues.
“I think it’s important we support our local food suppliers and our farmers who are trying to sell their produce, while many of us buy imported fruit and vegetables.
“It’s also imperative we plant trees. Over the past few years, we’ve celebrated Arbour Month by visiting local schools and encouraging them to plant trees.”
She finished off by saying, “You can make a difference every single day. Chat with people, ask how they are. Congratulations to you all here today on receiving these awards. Always remember, we have to be deliberate in the choices we make. We are our own greatest enemies and we’ll judge another woman, instead of saying well done. We need to learn to celebrate each other. Make a decision now that in the next year you’ll make a change for the better in people’s lives.”
Wissler handed out the awards to the nominated women, Tammy Alberts, Thea Mendlula, Desiree Singh, Chalrmaine Pereira, Michelle Lennard, Vicky Welman-Gerber, Michelle Keating, Julie Bezuidenhout, Dr Ntloleng Mabene, Nicky Vakaloudis and Claire Theart.
“You all in your own way have made a huge impact within our community and I thank you for all your dedication and hard work,” she added.
She went on to thank Catherine for being such a wonderful inspiration and giving up her valued time; to Yvonne and Mariane van Dijk, and Kim Kotze for everything they do for her and the community; and to Turn ’n Tender for hosting the awards. She also thanked the wonderful sponsors, Hester Smith and Krystal Coconas (Mall of the South) for the wonderful prizes, Thaba Eco Hotel for a fabulous prize, Gold Reef City for prizes, Water King and Post Net.
