Learners welcome spring with music and alcohol

Learners vacate class to enjoy themselves.

SOME schools in Walkerville had to call it a day on Thursday, August 30 as most of the learners hosted a welcome ‘spring bash’ during school hours.

Walkerville was buzzing during the hours of 9am until 4pm as learners were wildly dancing to the beat of house-music while enjoying liquor. According to one of the learners, this event happens once a year without the knowledge of parents and teachers and it’s been happening since 2016.

The COURIER is in possession of a video depicting learners sharing hugs and holding alcohol while music is blaring from mini-bus taxis which is used as school transport.

One of the learners told COURIER that he was supposed to be writing a cycle test but he couldn’t miss this bash for the world.

“Even pens-down, which is always hosted in December, will be staged here. What is pleasing is that when we host these, violent fights are scarce. Obviously, we as learners don’t want our parents to know about this but as the COURIER will be publishing this we will be exposed now,” said the learner.

When the COURIER contacted De Deur SAPS for comment on the matter we were told that the station has no communications officer.

Response from the Gauteng Department of Education

“The department is aware of the matter and concerned about allegations of learners missing school at this time of the year, where preliminary exams and the preparation for final exams are underway.

“We can confirm that 12 learners from Ennerdale Secondary School attended the bash that took place at Walkerville. The parents of the learners have been informed and requested to report to school on September 4.

“However, Daleview Secondary and Ithuba Lethu have no knowledge of learners from the school taking part in the bash.

“The department calls upon all learners to prioritise their education, strive on improving their results and refrain from any acts of misconduct that may jeopardise their future,” said Steve Mabona, GDE spokesperson.
