Struggle icons at your doorstep

“I’m happy when people come past and pose for a picture, or school girls read out loud what is written by some of our icons.” - Nadia.

OWNER of Spaar on Spares Nadia Mahomed has decided to paint her outside wall with portraits of heroes from the struggle to beautify the area in Regents Park.

Some of the portraits include Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Chris Hani and among the portraits, there are also quotes from these icons. There is also graffiti of some of the political parties including the ANC, DA, EEF and IFP.

When asked why she decided to do this, she said, “Basically so many things brought me to design how I wanted to have the outside of the shop. I’m a South girl and we have so much ugliness around us all of the time, making the portraits and including sayings by some of the great leaders of our time is something that’s close to my heart.

“We need to make the youngsters aware of them and create a beautiful environment around us. I’m happy when people come past and pose for a picture, or school girls read out loud what is written by some of our icons. That is the reward.”
