WATCH: Alleged phone thief drowns in Wemmer Pan

The divers were able to retrieve his body from the dam.

A MAN has drowned in Wemmer Pan after he was chased by the community for allegedly stealing a phone.

According to Captain Jeff Phora, head of communications SAPS Moffat View, the man robbed someone of a phone in La Rochelle, 11th Street on August 19 and when he was chased by about 20 community members, he ran straight into the dam.

WATCH:

The community eventually pleaded with him to get out of the water last night, August 19, he refused until he drowned.

The divers were able to retrieve his body from the dam.
