Think of a shape, and with her gas burner she will create it. This lampworker said the idea was instilled in her some 30 years ago when an international glass blower artist came to South Africa to do a show.

“At the time I didn’t take this seriously, however, about 10 years ago when I Googled it, it came back to me that I can do this,” she said.

Sandra then found a tutor in Pretoria who makes glass beads. She took about three lessons and thereafter she taught herself the skills.

“You need to teach yourself in order to excel in this craft. Every creation I make is unique. People often want to have the same thing and I tell them I can only make a similar creation but not the same. Remember, what I made comes from my heart and that is why it will be different the next time I make it,” explained Sandra.

Everything from beads, Murano glass and a gas burner is imported from Italy.

“I must say it is an expensive trade because everything is imported from overseas. Also, my clientele is global. I get orders from all over the world, from north to south and west to east, people love my work,” noted Sandra.
