GILLVIEW baby Alaia Mcfadyen was born with a tooth which shocked both parents and nurses on May 29 at Germiston Hospital.
“There’s nothing quite like this, a baby born with a tooth. It’s amazing and shocking. I even thought I was dreaming when I saw my baby for the first time. She is normal like any other baby. I call her miracle baby,” said her mother Primla Mcfadyen.
Last year August, early in pregnancy Primla went to hospital after suffering severe bleeding. She was informed by South Rand Hospital that she had suffered a miscarriage. She was then advised to go for dilation and curettage (DMC) the following day where she was kept the whole day without any assistance. The DMC was not performed and she claims she was only given some pills.
She carried on with her normal life but this year January she told her husband that something isn’t right with her stomach. She went to a doctor in Germiston for a check-up and was given a verdict that she’s 22 weeks pregnant and was told that she never had a miscarriage.
Primla told the COURIER that if South Rand had performed the DMC they would have spotted that she did not have a miscarriage.
Baby Alaia was finally born at Germiston Hospital. An hour after her birth, Primla’s husband Wesly McFadyen was first to spot the tooth and nurses said it’s a swelling but after check-up it was confirmed it’s a tooth.
“I can’t believe this and at only nine weeks she has another four teeth pushing through. This is unbelievable. I was given advice to go to a dentist to have the tooth removed but I don’t see why I have to do that. She’s healthy and kicking and behaves like a normal baby,” said Primla.
Dr Vibha Jivan of Dr V. Jivan Practice said: “This depends on how the tooth started to develop in the womb and it is not something to be concerned about. But the parents must do check ups with a pediatrician.”
