Regents Park visual artist finally gets a stall

Joseph wants people to come and see his work at the market.

JOSEPH Somwe (17) from Regents Park, the founder of Somwe Art, has spread his wings and now boasts a stall at the Weekend Market in Ridgeway.

The purpose of getting a stall at the market is to exhibit his work, to get exposure and more clientele. Working from home wasn’t benefiting his art business.

He also wants to increase his fan base as he believes that as an artist you need to have fans that will follow your work.

“I am honoured because since my work was shown by the COURIER people have contacted me and even when I approached the organiser of the market he didn’t hesitate in granting me a stall. The way things are unfolding for me now makes me believe that in the next couple of years my work will be known throughout Africa,” said Joseph.

Joseph works with five artists that are currently under his guidance and he provides them with some insights in the art industry.

He is inviting parents around the south to bring their children, who aspire to become visual artists, to come to his stall every Saturday for training. A fee will be charged for classes.

“The stall is the first fundamental step for me and my artists. Our ultimate aim is to get our own permanent place where we can create a classic studio of visual art. From that studio we will be able to create our own portfolios,” he explained.

ARTISTS: Bonakele Arsan, Ilunga-Eric, Nompumelelo Vilakazi, John Nkosi, Evan Hadehe and Joseph Somwe (founder of Somwe Art).
