GALLERY: Disability is no hurdle to heroism

They decided this year not to wait for other people to devote 67 minutes for Mandela to them.

PERSONS with disabilities reached out on Mandela Day, July 18, to children who are orphaned and the elderly of Townsview at David House, Resthaven Ministries.

South Africans with disabilities have a clear message for the nation on Mandela Day: disability does not define people, and disability does not always equate to neediness.

On the centennial of Nelson Mandela’s birth, a group of persons with disabilities visited Resthaven to cook and serve lunch to children who are orphaned and elderly people who live there.

They decided this year not to wait for other people to devote 67 minutes for Mandela to them. In spite of some impairments, they spread love and friendship on Mandela Day.

In the spirit of the Casual Day 2018 theme, Be an Everyday Hero with Persons with Disabilities, they showed the world that disability is no hurdle to heroism: to caring, giving and serving others in the true spirit of Madiba. They cooked and served lunch at Resthaven, laying on a party for the children, giving the residents warm and snug blankets to help them through the cold Joburg winter, and giving every Resthaven resident a bag of toiletries.

“We salute everybody who supports us. And we salute everybody who receives our support!” said Therina Wentzel, national director of the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities that organised the annual Casual Day. This initiative at Resthaven proves that ability or disability is no hurdle to heroism.
