Conversations with strangers: Keeping busy is exercise

In the mornings Phillip drives two youngsters to school and he said that complements his pension money.

AT 72 one would think of a person as being old, frail and rigid. However, Phillip Modiba from South Hills is a reflection of the total opposite.

He is a strong and flexible pensioner who lives at Swinburne Old Age Home and for the past four years, he has been running errands for the old age home. He does gardening, painting and any other handyman’s job.

“I cannot just sit here and idle because I’m ‘old’. Though I’m not getting paid for what I do, I enjoy it. For me, it’s like I’m exercising. I have most of the tools and that makes my job a little bit easier,” he said.

He wishes that all the pensioners at the old age home can be considerate and stop littering and also compensate him a little bit so that he can be motivated to continue with what he is doing.
