MMC for Housing Meshack Van Wyk visited Wembley temporary houses

The City confirms that they have allocated everyone a house.

MMC for Housing Meschak van Wyk visited the newly revamped Wembley housing area on July 12 to inspect the completed accommodation units located for people that were evicted at 20 Mansions and Cape York buildings in 2017.

When the people were evicted they were placed in tents which were an unsustainable way of living The city organised prefabricated houses for the people. What pleased van Wyk was seeing people making use of water and electricity that the City provided them with.

Van Wyk said: “I needed to make sure that people were well-located in their deserved houses. People with big families were given double houses to accommodate their families. These people were suffering living in the tents having no electricity and running water and now they have all that.

“What pleases me the most is that we complied with the court order even though we couldn’t meet the deadline but in the end we delivered. And we can confirm that all the people, as ordered by the court to be granted accommodation, have been located. The staff members in the housing department did a tremendous job in enabling the people to move out of their tents into proper housing.”

Tobias Mgibauitaka said to the COURIER: “I am so excited. I was living in a tent and look at me now. I have a new home!”
