BOOYSENS police communication officer Captain Lorraine van Emmerik confirmed that a bribery and corruption case has been opened at Booysens Police Station following an arrest of a corrupt licensing examiner at Xavier Junction Licence Centre on July 3.
The male suspect who is in his 40s was arrested after the members of the JMPD Internal Affairs Fraud and Corruption Unit received a tip-off that the corrupt examiner took a R5 000 bribe from a learner of a driver’s licence.
The JMPD Internal Affairs Fraud and Corruption Unit then arrested the corrupt licensing examiner at the centre for corruption.
Wayne Minnaar, JMPD spokesperson, said the arresting officers discovered test results for a young driver without a learner driver’s licence who did the driver’s licence test.
“The suspect was searched and the R5 000 was found in his pocket. He was detained at the Booysens Police Station,” he said.
The JMPD chief of police David Tembe commended the officers for the arrest.
“This kind of corruption defeats the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in reducing road carnages. We will continue working continuously in rooting out bribery and corruption in the City of Johannesburg,” said Tembe.
