Online platform to boost participation in A Re Sebetseng

A Re Sebetseng is a mayoral monthly clean-up campaign which was launched on August 14 last year.

THE A Re Sebetseng mayoral clean-up campaign’s redesigned website went live on June 15. The online platform will make it simpler for scores of Johannesburg residents to participate in the campaign.

The new look online platform has been made possible by the generous pledge and commitment to a cleaner Joburg by WAO HOST, a website development and hosting company based in Johannesburg. The redesigned A Re Sebetseng online site is www.aresebetseng.co.za

WAO HOST pledged to redesign and host the online site for the City of Johannesburg during a Pikitup initiated pledging ceremony held in October last year. The website development company pledged also to host the site free of charge for a year.

A Re Sebetseng is a mayoral monthly clean-up campaign which was launched on August 14 last year. A Re Sebetseng means “let’s work” and is based on Rwanda’s model of monthly clean-up campaigns called Umuganda which mean working together to achieve a common purpose.

The campaign encourages all residents to assume responsibility and clean areas where they live, work and play. Since its launch last year, more than 35 000 people participated in more than 1 300 clean-up events citywide.

The going live of the A Re Sebetseng website is a testament to the commitment of WAO HOST to its pledge to establish the online platform which is more user-friendly and interactive so as to enable residents to participate in the campaign.

WAO HOST, director Evans Akorli said his company responded to the call by the mayor to the residents and business community of the City to support and participate in this noble cause. WAO Host offered to redesign and host the website to help promote the initiative online to the residents of Joburg.

“Our main drive was to make it easy for all stakeholders to get involved wherever they are. We are therefore proud to be associated with this vital initiative to keep our City clean,” Akorli said.

The website offers vital information about campaign dates, schedules, where campaigns are being undertaken in regions, where residents can collect cleaning materials, an indication of Pikitup depots nearest to residents and contact numbers of Pikitup representatives.

Post the clean-up campaign the online platform provides information such as recyclable waste materials recovered, tons of waste collected, how many people participated in the clean-up and the number of resources used for the campaign.
