FATHER of two Joe Anthony (37) from Chrisville was brutally attacked in a robbery on June 6 while closing the business he works for.

He was stabbed four times with an eight-inch bread knife. The worst wound was one that went into his side through his large intestine also causing damage to his pancreas and spleen. He was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. They only operated on him at 3.45am on Thursday morning.

On Friday his family was told that he needs a second operation. Daniel Prowse, his brother-in-law, said the doctor advised them to rather move him to a private hospital.

Joe is not on medical aid and a massive deposit was needed before the hospital would agree to have him admitted.

The family started posts and they got in some donations and he was then transferred to the Netcare Union Hospital in Alberton where treatment was started in the ICU.

He went in for his second operation on June 9 to repair all the damages and to try and clear out infection.

“The infection has spread to the abdomen and the lower part of his lungs has collapsed. The doctors have him heavily sedated and on a ventilator. He will go into theatre again on June 15. They have put his bleeding intestine in a bag to remove the infection. All of this is costing a huge sum of money and in order for the hospital to continue treatment we need to keep on paying them,” explained Daniel.

As of June 14, they have paid R145 000, however, this will escalate as the days progress. Daniel mentioned they need the funds but also prayers for Joe to pull through.
