Pensioner’s dogs poisoned at Reuven Old Age Home

TWO dogs belonging to Jimmy Collins (75) were poisoned at Reuven Old Age Home in the early hours of May 28.

Jimmy said the person who killed his dogs, Sid and Nancy, laced the meat with ‘two step’ poison and tossed it inside his yard.

“I don’t know why they killed my dogs because I always kept them in my yard. They were not a problem at all to others. I even installed cameras around my unit to curb these killings.

“The JSPCA came here and I wanted them to do an autopsy to establish the cause of death. I was told it will cost me R3 000 for each dog. I then took them to a private vet at R950, and that’s where I found out that they were poisoned by ‘two step’. This is very sad for me as I loved my dogs,” he said.

Jimmy had two other dogs previously killed.

“One of the dogs was taken to the street and it was run over by a car. The other one was also poisoned. It died in my arms in my bed,” he said.

He mentioned that he has been assaulted several times in and outside of Reuven Old Age Home and he has a case of assault and intimidation opened against the perpetrator. He said there are people who are constantly on his case.

Housing Department area manager Greg Mackett said he knows that Jimmy loves his dog like they were his children, however, there were people who complained about the noise of the dogs.

“According to Reuven Old Age Home rules, no one is permitted to have dogs on the premises. It is the rules,” he said.
