New robots at the intersection of Shakespeare and Longfellow streets

The purpose of these robots is to bring some order to the traffic at the intersections and request all residents and motorists, in general, to be patient on the road.

NEW robots have been erected to tackle traffic congestion and to reduce the chances of accidents occurring at a busy intersection.

Since 2016, residents have been complaining about the traffic congestion, as well as the potential danger the busy intersection of Shakespeare and Longfellow streets, Ridgeway, poses for road users. Furthermore, this intersection caused major travel delays, especially in the mornings.

Ward 54 Clr Sergio dos Santos said he engaged with the Joburg Roads Agency (JRA) requesting they investigate possible measures which can be implemented to tackle this problem after a resident brought this issue to his attention.

“After two onsite meetings with the JRA traffic engineer, I agreed that something needed to be done. I began the process from my side which entailed geometrical technical drawings and seeking a budget approval. It has been a long process but the approval for robots and a budget was finally approved by JRA.

“In early December 2017, JRA commenced with the installation and stopped during the festive period. There was, however, a snag with internal departments due to payment allocations, between JRA and City Power, but that was finally resolved in May. Within the second week of May, City Power completed their electricity connections and JRA completed their work and the robots went live. I want to send a humble thank you to JRA for all their hard work and commitment on this matter,” explained dos Santos.

The purpose of these robots is to bring some order to the traffic at the intersections and request all residents and motorists, in general, to be patient on the road.

He said the DA-coalition government continues to pride itself on service delivery.

“Our residents’ safety is of great importance to us,” noted the councillor.
