Somwe (17) uses his talent to promote Africa

A DISTINCTION in visual arts enhanced Joseph Somwe’s (17) talent in drawing and the drive to tell the African stories through a canvas.

This former The Hill High School learner from Regents Park wishes people to celebrate Africa through all forms of art.

“I matriculated last year and got distinctions in visual arts, history and life orientation. My visual arts teacher was a great influence on me. She taught me different mediums of drawing using oil, acrylics, watercolour, pen and pastel. I also get canvasses from her,” explained Joseph.

Joseph focuses on portraits, especially of African people.

“I want to depict the suffering and the joy on their faces. Also to dignify them and give character through painting. African women are strong, not shaken, and you can see that in my paintings.

“Excelling in history at school helped me a lot because I know these African people and I know their strengths. I also know the pain and suffering they went through. Even after all the atrocities they endured, they never forgot their culture, rituals and beliefs,” he said.

“In future, I envisage owning my studio where I can train youngsters to create art and keep them off the streets. So people can support me in having my art gallery,” noted Joseph.

There will be a Jozi July Exhibition on July 7 at 1 Eloff Street, where Joseph is going to showcase his work. To view his paintings follow him on Facebook: Somwe Comics, Instagram: joeypoetic_art or contact him on 064 091 0296.
