Unemployment tackled by playing soccer in the park

Being unemployed is no issue to these young men of Turffontein.

A group of young men from Turffontein is not much concerned about being unemployed.

These young men come together every day with one purpose which is not to get caught up in all the crime that has captured young people. They always play soccer at Rotunda Park on the soccer court. The quintessential task when these young men play is showboating and ruffling their dribbling skills. Some of the locals turn up to support and enjoy the free entertainment.

They have been doing this for more than two years. Some of them have been applying for jobs but has gotten no feedback. Now, they opted to keep themselves preoccupied with playing soccer. If you don’t have the moves and skills when joining, they teach you.

Curtis-Lee Woodroffe, the leader said: “We are not only playing soccer when we are together but we teach each other social skills and share jokes. The only problem that is troubling us is the artificial patch that we play on that is worn out. We want to host tournaments here so that people can see that being unemployed can’t prevent you from being yourself. Also, if we can get help from local teams or anyone to help us with soccer equipment it will be much appreciated.”
