Helping underprivileged communities treat their dogs

Helping animals in different communities

BALLS an’ All based in Walkerville is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) as well as public benefit organisation (PBO) which was established in 2016 by Ron Horton and Mareli MacFarlane.

The purpose of the organisation is to supply sterilisation services and veterinary care to the animals of those who can’t afford standard veterinary rates.

The organisation is more active in townships and informal settlements where they offer free parasite control, basic health care, veterinary services, pet food, collars and running lines for dogs. Ron and Mareli identified the need among the poor, seeing that they are struggling financially in regards to veterinary services which was not affordable to many. Prior to the establishment of the organisation, the community had no one to turn to for assistance when animal problems arose. The communities were faced with challenges such as dogs becoming ill, being injured, starving, abused or neglected.

FOUNDERS: Mareli MacFarlane of Henley Pet Network and Ron Horton of Mia Feeds joined forces to run Balls an’ All.

Mareli said: “Hundreds of animals were suffering due to lack of funds. To address this problem we conducted events such as quiz evenings, held book sales and many other fund-raising activities. The organisation is run by two people but we are backed by volunteers as well as other organisations which provide us manpower and funding when needed.”
