Long grass in and around the South Hills area causes frustration

COURIER has done a couple of stories about the long grass in the South. It seems there is no tangible plan for this problem in the area.

CHARMAINE Tromp (60) is livid about the slovenly state of grass in and around the South Hills area, especially in Outspan Road.

She said the long grass, weeded pavements and potholes in the area are disturbing, to say the least. Charmaine also mentioned that the community of South Hills, especially in flats along Klipriviersberg Road, want the ward councillor to do something or else they will remove her from the post.

“I have never skipped my rent, water and lights, I also pay tax every month but I’m subjected to live like this. The area is a mess. You cannot walk on the pavements because of the long grass. Vagrants are all over and they can hide in the grass and mug unsuspecting community members, especially in the early hours of the day when they are going to work.

“I have 12 grandchildren. They cannot come here and play because of the bad state of our area. We voted this councillor in and we can take her out if she continues to ignore us. The government must stop misusing our money and do the right thing. If this is not addressed in two weeks, I swear hell will break loose. I am tired of complaining about one and the same thing,” she said.

Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame previously cited that there is no budget to pay contractors to cut the grass.

“The long grass is a big issue in the entire Gauteng not only in Ward 57; the budget was merely not enough for contractors to keep the grass short. I have noticed that they are starting to cut in Outspan Road. Hopefully the ward will look good again soon once they are completed with the grass cutting,” she said.

Jenny Moodley, general manager of Stakeholder and Public Relations for Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo said sidewalks, verges and main arterials are for the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

A media enquiry was sent to Bertha Peters-Scheepers, operations manager for marketing and communications at the JRA, she referred the inquiry to Karishma Ganpath from JRA said she said a call has been logged to cut the grass in the area.
