AFTER 16 remand detainees escaped from Johannesburg Correctional Centre, Medium A on April 9, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed that three more escapees were arrested in KZN.
This means only seven escapees are still at large. Two escapees were shot dead on April 10 in Greytown, KZN during a shootout with the police and four were rearrested.

Mocheta Monama, acting regional co-ordinator communication (Gauteng), DCS said, “the DCS, together with other law enforcement agencies, will not rest until all are back behind bars.”
He also dismisses the allegations that the detainees used a cellphone to escape.
“Investigations in the matter are still continuing. Allegations about the use of a cellphone to aid the escape are unfounded at this stage,” he said.
