A member of the public was arrested for being in possession of two stolen electricity meters worth R4 000 on April 9.
The suspect was detained at the Booysens Police Station. It is alleged that power supply to the suspect’s property was disconnected last week during operation Buya Mthetho after her account was in arrears. The suspect went to the City Power offices in Booysens on April 9 to request for reconnection to her property.
As she was busy negotiating with officials from the City, one of the technicians present noticed that she was carrying two meters in her handbag. The serial numbers of the meters were then checked in the system and it was discovered that the meters were reported stolen in Lenasia South.
The operation was led by the City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Services (GFIS), working together with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and City Power.
City of Joburg executive mayor Clr Herman Mashaba said he has faith that the GFIS, JMPD and the operation Buya Mthetho team, working with the law enforcement partners, will do all it can to ensure lawbreakers are held to account.
“The operation’s main focus is to ensure that the City’s by-laws are adhered to by all within the City and that the rule of law becomes the order of the day. The City, working with all state enforcement agencies, will not leave any stone unturned when dealing with criminal activities within our area of jurisdiction. I hope that the residents of Johannesburg will support our initiative and report crime and criminals to our authorities,” he said.
